New published work!

Coinciding with World Diabetes Day, 14th November, is the publication of our work, ‘Induction of Type I Diabetes Mellitus in Beagle Dogs Using Alloxan and Streptozotocin’. Important insight that takes us nearer to enhanced translatability to the human health field.

Rodents have become the most frequently used species for these models, however, success in the development of preventive or disease-reversing therapies for type I diabetes has been limited and thus the need for alternative models is much needed. Transpharmation, with its colony of Beagle dogs, is leading the way. As larger mammalian species, dogs are more physiologically relevant to humans. Diabetic work in canines is directly translatable to the development of therapeutics targeting this species. This has important implications for the field of canine veterinary medicine, as canine diabetes mellitus is increasing in prevalence and is one of the most common endocrine disorders in dogs.
