Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) in pets, much like in people, is a degenerative joint disease associated with aging, leading to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and a significant decline in quality of life. This condition is a major cause of lameness in companion animals, particularly in senior and large-breed dogs, with studies estimating that up to 20% of adult dogs suffer from some degree of degenerative joint disease.
Transpharmation maintains a colony of aged Beagle dogs with naturally occurring osteoarthritis to provide a clinically relevant model for the assessment of potential OA therapeutics. This unique resource allows us to support companies in the development and validation of treatments aimed at improving mobility and quality of life in affected animals. Osteoarthritic dogs in our colony are clinically identified using joint radiographs and questionnaire-based pain assessments to ensure enrolled subjects reflect the target patient population encountered in veterinary clinical practice.
