Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with anti-neoplastics often develop a dose-limiting painful neuropathy. This neuropathy can be modelled in rodents with Oxaliplatin or Paclitaxel administration, which cause progressive neuronal degeneration, mechanical hypersensitivity and cold allodynia that can be reversed by gabapentinoid or duloxetine treatment. This systemic neuropathy persists for at least 2-3 weeks and is thought to have both peripheral (e.g. conduction velocity changes, mitochondrial dysfunction) as well as central components (central sensitization).
